About

New Wine, New Wineskins seeks to create an atmosphere of friendship, mutual respect, dialogue, academic enrichment, and charity in which Catholic moral theologians in the early stages of their careers may gather for a common formation experience where participants are invited to explore the vocation of the moral theologian as committed to the common good of the Church, the academy, and the societies in which we live and work.

As an organization we are committed to:

1. Fellowship: Our primary commitment is to host an annual conference in which Catholic moral theologians are invited to build fellowship, community, and trust among those developing a vocation and career as a moral theologian. We also seek to expand our membership to include those now entering the field of moral theology.

2. Academic Inquiry: We seek to foster high-quality academic exchange through the following:

  • Inviting senior scholars in the field of moral theology to pass on their wisdom by engaging in (a) intergenerational dialogue, (b) networking, (c) scholarly argument, and (d) by providing their personal history regarding their formation in and contributions to the field.
  • Presenting academic papers by emerging scholars where ideas are shared, discussed, and critiqued in an environment of safe and charitable exchange.
  • Fostering informal dialogue on academic issues through shared meals and recreation.

3. Charity: We recognize the potential for increased polarization in the field of moral theology, and therefore seek to foster an atmosphere of mutual respect and charitable exchange between those of all backgrounds and perspectives. One of the founding goals of New Wine New Wineskins has always been to create a space for dialogue beyond the ideological divides that prevent authentic and creative exchange of ideas.

4. Vocation: We believe that as moral theologians we hold a distinctive role in our research, teaching, writing, and public witness to humanity’s common pursuit of the good and of moral truth in the Church, the academy, and in our societies, and we seek to foster greater awareness of how this identity influences our work.
